RES2H2 consortium’s first in-person meeting

The RES2H2 consortium meets for the first time at ICFO to exchange views and perspectives about the project, its progress, the current outcomes and the next steps and challenges in extracting hydrogen from wastewater with the use of renewable energies.

February 02, 2024

On Wednesday January 30th, the consortium of RES2H2 gathered in person at ICFO, for the first time. The team consolidated the goals of the project, reviewed its status and current outcomes, and shared perspectives and new ideas on how to proceed with the next steps.

During the morning, the consortium partners from ICFO, DAM Group and the companies Sixsenso, Technologies S.L. and APRIA Systems S.L., each gave an overview of their respective tasks and work packages. Later in the afternoon, they had the opportunity to visit the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP or EDAR for Estación Depuradora de Aguas Residuales) in Montornès del Vallès, in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

About RES2H2

RES2H2, funded by the PERTE NextGenerationEU recovery plan for Renewable Energy, Renewable Hydrogen and Storage, is constituted by a group of organizations and entities that cover the entire hydrogen value chain for the proposed solution, facilitating an effective collaboration and technology transfer between the business sector and the scientific community.

Throughout these next three years, the project will seek to develop new solutions for water electrolysis based on anion exchange systems (AEM) that, unlike standard systems, do not depend on highly purified and deionized water streams. On top of this, the project will explore new avenues to wastewater processing through the chemical and electrochemical oxidation of contaminants in the anode compartment. As such, RES2H2 will offer an integrated solution to hydrogen generation and wastewater treatment, powered by renewable electricity.

The project’s environmental impact

The expected outcomes will contribute to the fight against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, helping to prevent water pollution and enhancing its treatment, reducing the use of natural resources, contributing to a circular economy and improving environmental sustainability in general.
