Seminar Room Quantum networks will be interconnected using photons, and in order for networks to grow, quantum memories for light have been identified as a key technology because they facilitate scalability. Beyond providing scalability, single-mode memories also provide a new toolbox for photonic quantum information. For example, enabling high-dimensional encoding schemes, increasing the connectivity of quantum networks, and as active filters for solid-state single-photon sources. In this talk I will discuss two different single-mode memory protocols: Raman and ORCA, which are both based on two-photon absorption in warm alkali vapour. I will discuss the temporal mode properties of these protocols, and demonstrate that a single-mode memory can separate, delay and manipulate temporal modes of light. Using the Raman protocol we demonstrate conversion between temporal modes in a high-dimensional space (d=5) whilst being fibre-compatible, and also show pulse bandwidth conversion of a factor of 25 to enable efficient interfacing of distinct quantum systems. I will also discuss how the noise-free ORCA memory can improve the purity and indistinguishability of photons from quantum dot single-photon sources, and highlight the experimental progress on this front.
