MIT Prof Pablo Jarillo-Herrero accepts appointment to formalize collaborative relationship with ICFO

January 17, 2022

MIT Professor of Physics since 2008, Prof Pablo Jarillo-Herrero, is a world renown expert in the area of experimental condensed matter physics, in particular quantum electronic transport and optoelectronics in novel low dimensional materials, such as graphene and topological insulators (TIs).  He is well-known for his pioneering research on twisted bilayer graphene, and has received many awards for his career to date including the Spanish Royal Society Young Investigator Award (2007), an NSF Career Award (2008), the IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Semiconductor Physics (2010), a DOE Early Career Award (2011), a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE, 2012), an ONR Young Investigator Award (2013), Breakthrough of the Year Award by Physics World (2018), the Buckley Prize (2019), a Wolf Prize in Physics (2020), the Medal of the Spanish Royal Physics Society (2020), a US National Academy of Sciences Award for Scientific Discovery (2021), a NIMS Award from the National Institute for Materials Science, Japan (2021) and a Max Planck Humboldt Research Award (2021), among others.

We are pleased to announced that Prof Jarillo-Herrero has recently been appointed ICFO Distinguished Invited Professor. Having participated in many fruitful collaborations with ICFO researchers over the years, this appointment will facilitate further interactions and visits to our institute to offer scientific seminars, participate in joint ICFO-MIT research workshops and conferences open to the worldwide community, participate jointly in international projects, and collaborative research activities.

One of the planned initial research activities will be in the area of 2D and moiré quantum materials in collaboration with several research groups but primarily with the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof at ICFO Frank Koppens and the Quantum NanoElectronics and NanoMechanics group led by ICFO Prof Adrian Bachtold. His appointment will include dedicated laboratory and personnel devoted to the joint activities.

Welcome Prof. Jarillo-Herrero!
