BEYOND ICFO

Nanofabrica, founded by ICFOnian Jon Donner, acquired by industry leader Nano Dimension Ltd.

May 03, 2021

After ICFO PhD graduate Jon Donner defended his thesis entitled “Thermo-Plasmonics: Controlling and Probing Temperature on the Nanometer Scale” in 2014, he went on to get his first taste for deep tech start-ups through a collaboration with ICFO’s Knowledge and Tech Transfer unit led by Dr Silvia Carrasco. A short while after, having acquired a taste for entrepreneurship, Jon set out on his own ventures, co-founding Nanofabrica, his second start-up company, to bring the power of 3D printing to precision manufacturing.

In 2019 Jon offered an Alumni Seminar to ICFOnians on his start-up experience. At that time, Nanofabrica was producing a product, developed in direct interaction with customers, with unique set of specifications: 1 micron resolution over a relatively huge build volume of 5X5X10 cm. The company had grown to include HW, SW, optics, chemistry as well as “maker” expertise.

On April 27, Nano Dimension Ltd (Nasdaq: NNDM), an industry leading Additively Manufactured Electronics (AME)/PE (3D-Printed Electronics) provider, announced that it has signed and closed a definitive agreement to acquire NanoFabrica.

The co-founders and other members of the NanoFabrica team are all expected to now join Nano Dimension as part of the acquisition agreement. Jon will become General Manager of the NanoFabrica Division of Nano Dimension. As such he made the following official comment. “Today is an exciting day for NanoFabrica and for the entire field of precision manufacturing. We have set out on a mission to transform this traditional analog non-environmentally friendly industry, and by joining the segment leader, Nano Dimension, we will be able to fulfill our mission statement much faster and in more elaborate fashion. By combining the advanced capabilities of deep learning together with our manufacturing systems, we hope to improve printing speed by five times and yield by 20 times. Henceforth, by integrating our ultra-precise miniaturization capability with Nano Dimension’s Hi-PEDsTM (High-Performance-Electronic-Devices), we shall become a transformative power in our vertical markets. Nano Dimension-NanoFabrica’s combined offering will greatly increase the number of applications that can be relevant for mass manufacturing on our planned neural network of digital manufacturing systems.”

Congratulations Jon and the entire NanoFabrica team!
